Belgium melted 22,000 rifles and pistols in the furnace

Brussels: Belgian law enforcement agencies melted thousands of pistols and rifles in a furnace and turned them into steel.

For this, 22,000 rifles and other firearms were collected across the country. When it was smelted in the furnace, 60 tonnes of crude steel were obtained. The owners themselves handed over the weapons to the police and most inherited them from their elders, but they no longer want to keep them.

East Flanders Governor Karina Van Coutter said in a statement that half of the weapons were police weapons that have become obsolete.

"I am happy that our society has lost so many weapons, the total number of weapons is 22,457, it shows that our citizens will be safer and the weapons will no longer be used," she said.
